Can a croissant make you look tired?

Science says yes. In a weird twist of fate, that flaky French breakfast might actually be dimming your glow. And no, the camera isn’t lying.

French scientists recently studied how food affects how attractive women appear to others.

The researchers invited 104 people of different genders to participate. They tracked what these people ate and took pictures of them after their meals.

Surprising, right?

Many of us enjoy pastries for breakfast without considering how they affect our appearance. But could these tasty options actually make us look less attractive?

Eating high-sugar foods leads to higher blood glucose levels, which cause glycation, wrinkles, and other skin problems. But what about having just croissants and baguettes for breakfast?

According to this study, your breakfast choices can impact your attractiveness to others!

Women who ate high glycemic index (GI) foods for breakfast appeared less attractive than those who chose low-GI breakfast options.

Both breakfast types in the study contained the same number of calories but differed in their glycemic load. Sweet foods with little fiber have a high GI, including croissants and baguettes.

The researchers photographed participants' faces two hours after eating. Only the high-glycemic breakfast caused a decrease in attractiveness!

Why does this happen?

About two hours after eating high-GI foods, your blood glucose drops suddenly, causing hypoglycemia. This means your blood sugar falls below normal levels. When this happens, your body reduces blood flow to your skin. Your skin might look paler and more tired. Modern cameras can capture these changes!

Beauty and sugar.

For women, regularly eating refined carbohydrates at breakfast decreases attractiveness while increasing calorie intake! These refined carbs include white bread, pastries, and sugary cereals. They cause your blood sugar to spike rapidly and then crash, leaving you hungry again shortly after eating.

Study results:

  • Both men and women preferred people who ate higher-calorie foods for breakfast.

  • Men preferred women who ate lower glycemic load (GL) foods for breakfast and afternoon snacks.

  • Women preferred men who ate higher GI foods for afternoon snacks, but consumed fewer calories in the afternoon.

  • Women felt attracted to men who appeared more masculine, while men preferred women who looked more feminine.

Starting your day with a healthy breakfast brings many benefits for:

One study discovered that obesity and insulin resistance syndrome rates dropped by 35 to 50 percent among people who ate breakfast every day compared to those who often skipped it.

But eating just any breakfast isn't enough - you need high-quality fuel for your body. Sugary cereals and snack bars don't qualify, despite breakfast food companies spending billions on advertising.

Researchers at Vanderbilt University wanted to know if meal timing affects how efficiently our bodies burn energy. They tested whether our body's natural daily rhythm controls how we process food during the day versus at night.

Middle-aged and older participants stayed in a special chamber for two separate 56-hour sessions. In one session, they ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In the other, they had lunch, dinner, and a late-night snack.

Participants consumed the same amount of food and used the same amount of energy in both sessions. The researchers found that those eating late-night snacks burned less fat during the night compared to those who ate breakfast without a late snack.

The researchers concluded: "The timing of meals affects whether your body uses or stores the food you eat. Fasting between dinner and breakfast helps optimize weight management."

This means that even when people eat and burn the same number of calories, those who eat at night will likely gain more weight than those who eat breakfast instead. Your body processes calories differently depending on when you eat them!

The Beauty breakfast.

The best breakfasts for looking your best mainly include fats and proteins with only small amounts of refined carbohydrates. Try options like:

  • Eggs with avocado and a small portion of whole-grain toast

  • Greek yogurt with nuts and berries

  • Oatmeal made with milk and topped with nuts

These breakfast choices provide steady energy throughout the morning and help maintain stable blood sugar levels.

Main rules for a nutritious breakfast:

  1. Make your breakfast calorie-rich - the heartier your breakfast, the less you'll overeat later in the day.

  2. Get most of your breakfast calories from proteins and fats. Good protein sources include eggs, Greek yogurt, and lean meats. Healthy fats come from avocados, nuts, and olive oil.

  3. Choose carbohydrates that rank low on the glycemic index and contain plenty of fiber. Examples include oatmeal, berries, and whole grains.

  4. Stay hydrated! Drink water with your breakfast to help your digestion and skin health.

Following these guidelines will make you manage your weight better and look more attractive to others! The science shows that what you eat affects not just how you feel but also how others perceive you.
