Collagen accounts for about 30% of the total protein in your body. One of its primary functions is to provide structural support and strength to tissues such as skin, bones, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage, allowing them to stretch while maintaining tissue integrity. As such, collagen is crucial for repairing soft, muscle, and connective tissue, which tend to weaken and become less elastic with age.

Different types of collagen exist in our body: Type I collagen forms the connective tissue in tendons, ligaments, corneas, bones, and skin. Type III collagen works with Type I collagen in skin and blood vessels. Type II collagen mainly exists in cartilage.

Glycine makes up nearly one-third of the amino acids in collagen. Collagen is also high in proline, hydroxyproline and alanine.

Here's where things get tricky - collagen is a protein, and a healthy body should easily create it from amino acids. However, after age 18, our skin loses about 1 percent of its collagen yearly. Our digestive system changes as we age because our stomach produces less acid. While our body still receives amino acids, it uses them for more critical needs.

So, how does our stomach break down the collagen we take as supplements? Well, it could do a better job. Some amino acids reach our blood, but due to overall shortages, our body either burns them for energy or uses them to build other proteins!

Scientists discovered that pre-cut collagen absorbs better and goes where our body needs it. Research shows that pre-processed (hydrolyzed/peptide) collagen works better than pure collagen supplements.

Here are the benefits:

  • Skin elasticity improves by 7%

  • Collagen combinations with hyaluronic acid show slightly better results in studies, improving facial lines and wrinkles by about 8.35%

  • Research shows vitamin C increases collagen production in our genes, so supplements combining collagen with vitamin C, biotin, and zinc may work more effectively.

Many mistakenly believe that beef can fulfill most of your body's protein requirements. However, this assumption overlooks the substantial differences in amino acid composition between beef and collagen. Relying solely on muscle meat fails to provide sufficient amino acids necessary for strengthening connective tissue.

Additionally, collagen contains higher levels of specific amino acids with anti-inflammatory and longevity-promoting properties.

Bone broth also contains plenty of healthy fat and important nutrients like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulfur, and trace minerals. It also contains the broken-down material from cartilage and tendons, such as chondroitin sulfates and glucosamine. Like collagen, chondroitin and glucosamine are sold as supplements, but bone broth can replace the need for all of them at a fraction of the price.
