Guess who's stealing your health
Plus: complete cheat sheet
Everyone says that ultra-processed foods are bad for us. But is that really true, and if so, why?

ULTRA-PROCESSED FOODS (UPF) - are foods that have gone through changes in their natural state. For example, it might preserve, freeze, bake, or dry the food. It might have a lot of added things like sugar, salt, or artificial flavors. They're designed to last a long time on the shelf, taste great, are simple to prepare, and are quick to eat. But, eating these foods often is bad for our health. Adults get almost 60% of their diet from UPFs, and for kids, it's nearly 70%.
Why should we care?
Eating too much of these can increase your chances of getting obesity, heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and stomach problems. There's also a 65% higher risk of dying from these diseases.
Why do we eat so much? Here are a few reasons:
We might not eat enough healthy fats for breakfast, or our body doesn't digest them well, leaving us hungry soon after.
Sometimes, we skip breakfast because we're in a hurry or just don't feel like eating.
Other times, we're just craving something delicious.
UPFs are everywhere, easy to keep, and cheap, making them a quick and easy option. These foods are high in calories, causing us to eat too much sugar and bad fats instead of protein, good fats, slow carbs, and fiber.
What can we do about it?
Make healthy meals at home using fresh ingredients and bring them with you.
Choose meals without ultra-processed foods when eating out at cafes or restaurants.
Understanding what's in our food can help us and our families make healthier choices.
