Mushrooms improve memory and stimulate nerve growth.
Let's start with the Lion's Mane mushroom, which many people already love!
A new study reveals that the Lion's Mane mushroom (Hericium erinaceus) significantly grows brain cells and enhances memory. Lab tests confirm that active compounds in the mushroom help neurons connect better.
This discovery could help treat and prevent brain diseases like Alzheimer's.
Traditional Chinese medicine has used Lion's Mane mushrooms for centuries to support brain health. Recent studies now confirm these benefits.
Clinical trials of Lion's Mane mushroom (Hericium erinaceus) demonstrate its potential to enhance thinking abilities and improve mood.
Lion's mane also contains ergothioneine, a powerful antioxidant that may promote longevity and protect against age-related diseases. It also acts as a prebiotic, supporting gut health and potentially limiting harmful bacteria growth.
Beyond brain and gut health, lion's mane may help ease:
depression
anxiety
boost immune health
promote heart health
aid in managing Type 2 diabetes and potentially have antitumor effects
Mushrooms as natural antidepressants.
A small clinical trial in 2010 studied how H. erinaceus affected depression symptoms, anxiety, and sleep quality in 30 menopausal women. The women ate cookies containing 0.5g of mushroom powder (mycelium) for 4 weeks. Their mood improved and anxiety decreased, though the study only included a small group of menopausal women.
In another case, an 86-year-old patient with recurring depression showed better thinking abilities after taking Amyloban® 3399, a standardized extract from H. erinaceus mushrooms. However, doctors couldn't tell exactly how well the mushroom worked because the patient also took the antidepressant mirtazapine at the same time.
A small study followed eight female students who had trouble sleeping. After taking Amyloban® 3399 for 4 weeks, their anxiety decreased and sleep quality improved.
Do mushrooms increase homocysteine?
Mushrooms contain high amounts of niacin, which comes in two forms: nicotinamide and nicotinic acid (NA). While niacin can boost NAD levels, which helps the body, mushrooms contain lots of nicotinamide!
Scientists discovered that nicotinamide increases blood homocysteine levels more than nicotinic acid does. Therefore, people who already have high homocysteine levels should know that eating mushrooms in any form might raise their levels even more!
Mushrooms contain some of the most powerful natural medicines on the planet, especially for boosting immunity during cold and flu season.
Many medicinal mushrooms have strong anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties.
Mushrooms can help slow aging, boost immunity, improve blood flow and cardiovascular health, stabilize blood sugar, increase athletic performance, and even help regenerate nerves.
Therefore, for those with high homocysteine, eating mushrooms in any form can further increase it!
